Visualizing Data
Data is a large component of the work of computer scientists. Programmers will often research and gather data to create a new product that will serve the public somehow. In this project, you and a partner will create a cultural product using one of several online design tools. It will be your task to become experts in the culture of the design tool and the math concepts that are associated with the tool. You will also create an original piece of artwork using the one of the design tools, and share what you have learned with your peers.
Part 1: Possible Design Tools
Explore the tools listed below, and choose one to work with for this project.
Part 2: Gathering Information
All the design tools listed above are based on a society's culture. Therefore, it is important to conduct some background research in order to establish a foundation of the culture that the design tool is based on. Your task will be to read through the Culture Background section of your chosen design tool and become experts in the culture of your design tool. You may want to record any new ideas or thoughts in your journal or another Google Doc.
Part 3: Making Math Connections
As you continue your research, you and your partner will also complete a tutorial that includes how to use the software and the math concepts that are used in the program. As you complete the tutorial, write any important ideas that you want to remember as you work toward your final product.
Part 4: Create Your Designs
Use your design tool to create an original image. Think about the math concepts and cultural background information you learned earlier.
Part 5: Polish Your Designs
If you need to edit your design and make it a polished product, you can use pixlr.com (an online Photoshop tool). Upload the saved file to Pixlr, and use the tools to make any edits to your image that are necessary. There should be tutorials online to help you.
Part 6: Final Products
Prepare a presentation or other product that includes the following information:
