Chemical Properties

These are properties that are unique to each element. Under certain conditions, atoms can react to produce a new substance or compound.

Atoms can be combined with other atoms to produce a new substance. For example, if you take 2 Hydrogen atoms and 1 Oxygen atom, you produce a new substance: H20...or WATER!

Viewing rust on a piece of iron is another example. Iron is usually a metallic or silver color, but when it is placed with oxygen...changes can begin to occur. The iron atoms interact with the oxygen to produce rust...or iron oxide.

Other chemical properties include:
  • Flammability
  • Corrosiveness
  • pH Level
  • Explosiveness

Physical Properties

These are properties that can be identified by using at least one of our five senses. Examples of Physical Properties include:

  • Boiling Point
  • Freezing Point
  • Density
  • Mass
  • Solubility (dissolve in water)
  • Color or Appearance
  • Odor
  • Texture
  • Luster
  • Viscosity (pouring rate)

Remember...there is NO new substance being formed.
