8th Grade Science Course Outline – 2013-2014
Welcome to 8th grade science at TYWLS of Astoria! My name is Jonathan Ryberg, and I am very excited to be working with you as we explore you and your family’s place in the Universe. As we launch into space, you will learn about the origins of the Universe, including its chemistry, which explains why we are similar to stars and other celestial objects. You will also have the opportunity to investigate the physics of the Universe, patterns of motion and what it might be like to live on Jupiter or Pluto. Most importantly, you will examine how you and your peers influence the your community, your environment, and the entire Universe around you, including how you can impact the future of space exploration.
As we investigate the world of science together this year, you will begin to understand that science is not a series of facts to be memorized, but rather an opportunity to develop skills that require inquiry and experimentation in order to answer questions you may have of your surrounding environment. We will use the scientific method to answer questions and gain a better understanding of the world around you.
The course will include class discussions, group assignments and projects, and, of course, plenty of scientific inquiry through laboratory experiences. You will be required to keep a class binder and notebook that will be used to organize your observations, data collection, research and reflections of your understandings.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Ryberg
