The majority of bacteria are helpful to us...they act as wonderful decomposers, breaking down organic things into nutrients for plants and animals. But some bacteria can cause some serious problems. That itchy, scratchy, sore throat may be caused by a bacterium known as Streptococcus pyogenes. Or, that upset stomach you have may be the result of some nasty food poisoning from E. coli or salmonella.
